Why I Think PALM is Losing Money

I have been following the Palm Inc. downfall ever since I found they would not support Windows Vista 64-bit Operating Systems with a USB Hot Sync. I have been a loyal customer of Palm since the first Palm Pilots. When I heard that my sister was laid off from Palm I started to do some searching in the news. The only thing I found was this article on PalmInfocenter:

A Round of Layoffs at Palm

Posted By: Ryan Kairer on Thursday, November 20, 2008 9:02:14 PM

Rumor:PalmInfocenter has received a couple of unconfirmed reports that Palm Inc. has had a round of layoffs this week. One report from a reliable source claims as many as 200 people were let go from the US team on Thursday. Most of the cuts are claimed to be in the sales and marketing departments. Sources also postulate that Palm will be closing some offices in Europe and Asia as well.

The news comes during a rather rough week for Palm’s stock and the US stock market in general. Shares in Palm closed at a new all time low over continued uncertainly about the general economy and Palm’s long planned turnaround. The last major round of layoffs came around this time last year when around 250 people were cut. Palm’s last reported head count in August was around 1,050 employees.

The company just recently reported its fifth consecutive quarterly loss back in September. At the time Palm CEO Ed Colliganstressed that the company was “still solidly in the midst of its transformation with some significant hurdles yet to come.” Palm is due to report the results of the current quarter on December 18th.

I can let you know now that this is not a rumor. My sister, who worked in the testing of new Windows based Palm smart-phones, was laid off on Thursday November 20, 2008.  I have yet to talk to her and once I do i will report more. I am hoping she did not sign a non-disclosure agreement as I want to get all the information I can and let you the readers know.

My wife and i were discussing this and find that one reason Palm is not making money is that they are not supporting all of thier products and many loyal customers are leaving them to go to either BlackBerry, the iPhone or any of the other smart-phones that are out there. Even a regular cell phone has some PDA functions built in. Alarms, calendars and contact lists.

PALM…Get A Clue!!!

There is a reson for this blog and that is to share my thoughts and the things I need to gripe about. My wife suggested I start a blog because of a problem I’m having with my TREO 755p that I use through Verizon. Want to know what the problem is? Well I’m gonna tell you…Since this business started I got a phone to use for the business. I went to Verizon and got the TREO 755p with unlimited voice and data plan. The reason I choose the Palm device over the Blackberry or even going to AT&T and getting an iPhone was loyalty. I have a relative that works for them and I’ve been using palms since I got my first Palm Pilot. I love the PALM OS and all of the programs I have for my handheld run on the PALM OS. I needed to change my Desktop computer, the one I sync with the PALM and lo and behold I find out after buying the new computer that PALM does’nt support the 64 BIT Vista Platform. I went to the PALM website and visited thier forum (http://forums.palm.com/palm/board/message?board.id=windows_hotsync&thread.id=17980) to see if there was a work around. The work around was to sync via bluetooth. It doesn’t work with the new PALM Desktop software. I then went to PALMs live support and below is an exact copy of the transcript from that conversation:

eSupport Chat Transcript
Thomas_Gardner: Cannot Sync with my treo 755p and have gone all the way through the forums.
Saben: Hello Thomas_Gardner, Thank you for contacting Palm Technical Support. My name is Saben. How may I help you?
Saben: Hello.
Saben: I understand that you are unable to HotSync the device on Vista 64 bit computer.
Saben: Let me tell you, Vista 64 bit doesn’t support the palm desktop software to sync the Palm OS device.

Thomas_Gardner: I have a Treo 655P and a Windows 64 Bit Vista system. I just recently upgraded tihe computer and have tried everything to hot sysnc it. What solution can you provide me?
Saben: But you can sync the Palm windows OS device on Vista 64 bit computer.
Saben: Else you can sync the Treo 755p on a Vista 32 bit computer.
Thomas_Gardner: I have all my software on the palm device is palm os software and have bee a palm customer sinece the first Palm Pilots.
Saben: I apologize for the inconvenience this may have caused to you.
Saben: I understand the situation.

Thomas_Gardner: I don’t have access to a vista 32 bit computer.
Thomas_Gardner: My business is at a standstill…If I got a new phone with the Windows OS I would have to pay full retail value.
Thomas_Gardner: I already checked on that.
Saben: No, you can exchange the device with a palm Windows OS device.
Thomas_Gardner: Not through Verizon. I would have to pay to have it activated.
Saben: Can you change the operating system on the computer to Vista 32 bit?
Thomas_Gardner: Thank you for your help.
Saben: Analyst has closed chat and left the room.

I admit, I could have stayed on a little longer but this has been frustrating. With the poliferation of 64 BIT Vista computers it would be in PALMS best interest to get the drivers created.

I’ll keep all you readers posted as I find out what is going on.
